“Safety is no longer an option. It is vital for the sustainability of our work, of the companies we work for, and for the protection of the environment. But most of all, safety protects the lives of our people and their families,” expressed Magsaysay Shipping and Logistics (MSL) President and CEO Jesse H. Maxwell, in his welcome remarks during the Partners in Safety Conference 2024 held on August 15, at the Robert Hall of Times Plaza Building.
Organized by Shell, in coordination with five (5) members of its Partners in Safety Program – MSL, Swan Shipping, Swordfish, Via Marine, and Petrolift – the event was attended by 143 key stakeholders, safety professionals, and industry movers. The conference highlighted Shell’s determined effort to develop a safety culture throughout its ecosystem of suppliers.
“We are here to learn, to share best practices, and to meet with others with shared values who collaborate on how together we could create the strongest impact on our operational safety performance,” continued Jesse.

Aligned with this year’s Safety Day theme, “Before I start work…”, Shell emphasized that small actions can create a big impact in moments that matter to people. Before starting work, conditions for success must be met and that everyone has the power to change the course of the future. Another important topic discussed was the vital role mental health plays in the safety of the people onsite.

A mini workshop was incorporated into the table discussions where participants engaged in analyzing a case study for a safety incident, while providing insights, inciting feedback, and proposing solutions. The group activity also paved the way for attendees to get acquainted with each other in addition to the networking opportunities provided during breakfast, session breaks, and luncheon.
With the conference being held in Manila again after the pandemic, the success was attributed to the harmony, synergy, and collaboration amongst Shell partners in safety, and the dedication and support of Magsaysay Group’s administration, corporate communications, information technology, and health, safety, environment, and security teams. A focused group discussion for key leaders of major stakeholders was held after the safety conference.
