MSL Hosts Safety and Technical Assurance Group 2024

Magsaysay Shipping and Logistics (MSL) hosted the Safety and Technical Assurance Group (STAG) event last November 22 at The Bayleaf Hotel in Manila, focused on the theme “Psychological Safety.” Led by Islas Tankers Seatransport Corp. (ITSC) and Magsaysay Shipmanagement, Inc. (MSI), the event gathered Shell partners, shipowners, and representatives to discuss the importance of creating a work environment where employees are empowered to share ideas and concerns.

 

The event began with opening remarks from Marine and Technical Adviser of Shell Capt. Jansel Sibal and President and CEO of MSL Jesse Maxwell.  They emphasized the significance of trust and transparency in fostering workplace cultures that prioritize safety and collaboration. 

This was followed by presentations from speakers representing various shipmanagement companies, including Translift Ship Management, Inc., Philippine National Lines, Inc., Via Marine Corporation, and Swordfish Marine Services Corp. They discussed human and organizational performance, emphasizing how psychological safety enhances workplace dynamics and overall performance.

 

The afternoon sessions delved into practical applications, including addressing insurer concerns about typhoon-related incidents and highlighting the role of leadership in fostering psychological safety, led by General Manager of MSL Tanker Division Abel Cagara. In addition, Senior Marine and Technical Adviser of Shell Capt. Manny De Castro, emphasized the importance of an open reporting culture and provided insights into Shell’s Incident and Casualty Reporting procedures. The event concluded with a recap from Head of MSI Capt. Joel Porto summarizing key takeaways, and closing remarks by Abel, reaffirming the commitment to advancing psychological safety across operations. The day emphasized the industry’s commitment to creating safer, more inclusive environments where trust and collaboration thrive.

 

The STAG event served as a testament to the maritime industry’s unwavering resolve to build a safer, more inclusive workplace. Through thoughtful discussions and shared experiences, the event highlighted the industry’s commitment to fostering an environment where psychological safety and collaboration are prioritized. As challenges within the maritime sector evolve, initiatives like these are essential in laying the groundwork for a resilient and progressive safety culture.
