Charting the Next Course: New Leaders Take the Helm at MMMA, MIS, and MLRI

Leadership transitions often mark the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. At MAGSAYSAY’s learning institutions, this transition comes with gratitude for a legacy of service and optimism for the future ahead.

With Dr. Michael C. Morales officially retiring on June 30 after his dedicated leadership at MOL Magsaysay Maritime Academy (MMMA), the organization welcomes a new set of leaders who will continue steering maritime education and learning toward greater heights.

Dr. Alex M. Enriquez Named New MMMA President

Effective July 1, 2026, Dr. Alex M. Enriquez has been appointed as the new President of MOL Magsaysay Maritime Academy (MMMA), succeeding Dr. Michael C. Morales.

Dr. Enriquez began his career at sea after earning his Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation, Major in Nautical Studies, from the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy in 1992. He served onboard international crude and product oil tankers with leading global shipping companies, building a strong foundation in maritime operations through years of seafaring experience.

In 2001, he brought that real-world expertise into maritime education, beginning a new chapter focused on shaping future maritime professionals.

Over the years, Dr. Enriquez has played a key role in strengthening Magsaysay’s learning ecosystem. As Institute Director of Magsaysay Institute of Shipping (MIS), he helped strengthen the cadetship program, expanded maritime upgrading initiatives, and supported the growth of technical and vocational skills programs. He also led the feasibility study and institutional groundwork that helped pave the way for the establishment of MMMA itself.

In 2024, he took on the role of Magsaysay Learning Resources, Inc. (MLRI) President, while concurrently serving as MIS Institute Director, continuing to drive learning innovation and operational excellence.

Now, as he takes the helm of MMMA, Dr. Enriquez brings with him decades of maritime, academic, and leadership experience—along with a deep understanding of the mission to develop world-class maritime professionals.

Capt. Frederieck T. Edu Takes Leadership of MIS and MLRI

MAGSAYSAY also welcomes Capt. Frederieck T. Edu as the new General Manager of MLRI and Institute Director of MIS.

Capt. Edu’s maritime journey began at Magsaysay Institute of Shipping, where he started as a Deck Cadet. From there, he steadily rose through the ranks, building an accomplished career as a Master Mariner, Marine Superintendent, Crewing Manager, and Training Instructor.

Across more than 24 years at sea and 10 years in ship management, Capt. Edu has developed deep expertise in maritime operations, safety, quality management, training, and people development. His extensive industry knowledge and leadership experience position him to shape the next generation of maritime talent.

In his new role, Capt. Edu will lead the transformation of Magsaysay Learning with a clear focus on expanding and strengthening training programs, elevating learning delivery, and unifying Magsaysay Learning into one integrated and high-performing functional unit.

A continuing purpose reflects these leadership transitions as the mission remains the same: to equip learners with the skills, discipline, and mindset needed to thrive in an evolving maritime industry.

With Dr. Enriquez leading MMMA and Capt. Edu guiding MIS and MLRI, the future of Magsaysay Learning moves forward with strong hands at the wheel.
