MTC Celebrates Completion of Second Cadet Enhancement Program Batch for South Africa

Magsaysay Training Center (MTC), in partnership with African Ocean Careers, celebrated the completion of the second batch of South African cadets under the Cadet Enhancement Program (CEP) on June 6, 2026, at the Times Plaza Building in Manila.

Over three months, the cadets underwent intensive technical instruction, practical exercises, and leadership development designed to bridge classroom learning with real-world shipboard operations. The program culminated in a 24-hour integrated shipboard simulation from June 4 to 5, testing their continuous watchkeeping and crisis-management skills under real-time operational pressure.

The graduation highlighted outstanding cadet performances in technical proficiency and discipline, presenting Leadership and Most Outstanding Trainee awards for both the deck and engine categories.

Magsaysay People Resources Corporation (MPRC) President Marlon Roño encouraged the graduates to carry forward both their technical skills and the cultural insights they gained. “After spending 84 days in the Philippines, I hope you leave not only with enhanced technical competencies, but also with a deeper appreciation of Filipino culture, leadership, and teamwork. As you work alongside different nationalities at sea, these experiences will serve as valuable foundations,” he said.

African Ocean Careers CEO Sobantu Tilayi likewise emphasized the strength of their long-standing partnership: “What began more than a decade ago was built on a shared vision, and over time we are now seeing that vision come to life. Everyone involved in this program is invested in your future, and it is the skills you have gained here that will enable you to achieve your goals.”

Guided by the principle “Start strong. Finish stronger,” the CEP remains a structured pathway for developing globally competitive, operationally ready maritime professionals.
